ENGINE (4-TEC)
COOLING SYSTEM
Symptom: HIGH ENGINE OPERATING TEMPERATURE1Check coolant level- Coolant level lower than recommendedCheck for leakage- Coolant leaking from control bore means damaged water pump rotary sealReplace rotary seal (refer to COOLING SYSTEM and CRANKCASE)- Cylinder head andor cylinder baseGasket(s) is(are) causing coolant leakageReplace- Gasket on water pump housing leaksRetighten screws andor replace gasket- Hoses are brittle andor hardReplace- Hose clamps are looseRetighten clamps2Check temperature sensor for electricalmechanical failure- Temperature sensor defectiveReplace3Check thermostat (located in the thermostat housing on the alternator side cover)- Thermostat defective (does not open when engine gets hot)Replace water pump housing (refer to COOLING SYSTEM)4Check condition of impeller located on the water pump shaft- Impeller fins broken andor impeller threads are damagedReplace
