Section 05 ENGINE MANAGEMENT Subsection 02 (COMPONENT INSPECTION AND ADJUSTMENT)
IGNITION COILS
Voltage Test WARNING
When disconnecting coil from spark plug, always disconnect coil from main harness firstNever check for engine ignition spark from an open coil andor spark plug in the engine compartment as spark may cause fuel vapor to igniteDisconnect the connector from the ignition coil and check the voltage supplied by the VCM

TYPICAL 1Ignition coil

NOTE: The VCM energizes the primary side of each ignition coil individuallyIt can detect open and short circuit in the primary winding but it does not check the secondary windingUsing the vehicle communication kit (VCK) with the B.U.D.Ssoftware, energize the ignition coil from the Activation sectionYou should hear the spark occurringIn doubt, use an inductive spark tester or sealed testeravailable from after-market toolequipment suppliers to prevent spark occurring in the vehicleOtherwise, perform the following checksAn ignition coil with good resistance measurement can still be faultyVoltage leak can occur at high voltage level which is not detectable with an ohmmeterReplacing the ignition coil may be necessary as test
