Section 06 ELECTRICAL Subsection 05 (ELECTRIC STARTER)
REMOVAL
Disconnect BLACK ground cable from battery Disconnect RED positive cable from battery
WARNING
Always disconnect ground cable first and connect last Disconnect RED cable and REDGREEN wire from starter solenoid switch Remove starter from engine
DISASSEMBLY
Disconnect bare wire linking starter and solenoidRemove nuts no16 then solenoid switch no10 by lifting and pulling to disengage from drive lever no15Unscrew starter screws (long) no1 then pull yoke no8 with end frame no2 to separate from drive housing no17Pull armature no9 with drive lever no15Remove insulator no4 then brush springs no7 being careful not to lose them since they will be projected outPull brush holder no5 from yoke no8Insert blade of small screwdriver between stop collars
Remove outer collar, circlip then inner collarRemove overrunning clutch no11Check the wear on bushing no18 by measuring the amount of radial play between the armature shaft and the bushingThe radial play should not exceed 0.20 mm (.008 in)If greater, replace the bushingTo replace, press out the old one toward bushing cover and press in new one with bushing pusherThe correct size of the bushing pusher to use is given on next illustrationCAUTION: Support drive housing adequately to prevent damage when pressing bushingA B
