CLEAN AN SPECT ON CLEANING
CAUTIONArmature starter yoke ass'y and unit assembly must not be immersed in cleaning solvent
Check the commutator out-of-round condition with Blocks and an indicatorIf the commutator out-of-round is more than 0.40 mm (.016 in), the commutator should be turned on latheCheck commutator outer diameterIf less than speciied value, replace
Clean brushes and holder with clean cloth soaked in solventBrushes must be dried thoroughly with clean clothBlow brush holder clean using compressed air,
WARNINGAlways wear safety goggles when using compressed air
Remove dirt, oil or grease from commutator using clean cloth soaked in suitable solventDry well using clean, dry clothClean engine starter gear teeth and drive unit (clutch)NOTEBushings must not be cleaned with grease dissolving agentsAO03 004006
Immerse all metal components in cleaning solutionDry using clean, dry cloth

NOTEAn ohmmeter may be used for the following testing procedures, except for the one concerning the shorted windings in the armatureCheck the commutator for roughness, burnt or scored surfaceIf necessary, turn the commutator on lathe, enough to remove grime onlyCheck the commutator for mica depthIf the depth is less than 0.20 mm (0.008 in), undercut the micaBe sure that no burrs are left and no copper dust remains between the segments after the undercutting operation is completedI
