ELECTRIC STARTER 3Test for grounds in the armature using growler test probesCheck between armature core and the commutator bars (fig3-5-9) 3)5-05 9Check that carbon brushes move freely in the guides of the brush holdersReplace damaged or blued brush springsTest brush pressure with spring scale (1.2 to 1.5 pounds)10Replace drive assembly if damaged or worn11Inspect starter solenoid for damage or wearTest solenoid operation as detailed in sub-section-3-4Replace as necessary
ASSEMBLY IMPORTANT: Prior to Assembly, apply thin coat of light machine oil on armature shaft and splinesAlso apply thin coat of low tempgrease over solenoid switch plunger, shift lever ends, shift lever pivot, steel washers, shims and isolating washer1Slide the drive assembly (clutch) onto the splined end of the armature shaft (fig3-5-11)Push the stop ring into location and place the retainer ring in the appropriate armature shaft groove

4Check for good solder joints between commutator bars and solder lugs
