ELECTRICAL Dynamic Testing of the Electric Starting System
Condition: Starter fails to turn motor or motor turns slowlyNOTE: Be sure the engine crankshaft is free to turn before proceedingFor this test digital multitester must be usedMeter connections are shown later in this chapterWith tester on VDC, place tester black lead on battery Remove battery, test andor serviceInstall fully negative (-) terminal and tester red lead on battery posi- charged shop battery to continue the testtive (+) terminal(A) Page 9.12Reading should be 12.6V or greaterIs it? (Continue with left column) No! Yes# Disconnect red engagement coil wire from start solenoidConnect black tester wire to an appropriate ground and red lead to red harness wire at solenoid(F) page 9.13Rotate ignition key to the start positionMeter should read battery voltageDoes it? No! Yes# With black tester lead on ground, check for voltage at large relay in terminal circuit breaker in and out terminals, and across both sides (red and redwhite) of the ignition switch with switch on startRepair or replace any defective parts
