ELECTRICAL Starter Motor Static Testing

(F) (Disconnect RW Wire)

1Remove starter motor and disassemble(See page 9.14 for exploded view) Mark end covers and housing for proper reassembly2Remove pinion retaining snap ring, spring and pinion gear3Remove brush end bushing dust cover4Remove housing through bolts5Slide brush end frame off end of starterNOTE: The electrical input post must stay with the field coil housing6Slide positive brush springs to the side, pull brushes out of their guides and remove brush plate7Clean and inspect starter componentsNOTE: Some cleaning solvents may damage the insulation in the starterCare should be exercised when selecting an appropriate solventThe brushes must slide freely in their holdersIf the commutator needs cleaning, use only an electrical contact cleaner andor non-metallic grit sandpaperReplace brush assembly when worn to 516 (.8 cm) or less
