332 Drive Belt Deflection
Perfonn this procedure whenever new drive belt is installed1Open and secure the hood2Remove the belt guard3Check that the drive belt is resting at the top of the driven pulley (Figure 14)4Place straightedge across the drive belt and compress the belt with ruler placed midway between the pulleys5Press the ruler down (Figure 15) until the slack is just removedDo not press the belt hard enough to push the belt into the pulley groove6Read the belt deflection at the bottom of the straightedge (Figure 15)7The belt deflection measured in Step should be within the limits listed in Table 28AOn all except some 1997 and later models, adjust the belt deflection as follows: aRemove the belt and driven pulley as described in this chapterbSeparate the pulley halves as described in this chaptercChange the thickness of adjust washers (12, Figure 6), as necessary, to provide the correct belt deflectionThe adjust washers are located between the driven pulley sheavesdReassemble and install the driven pulley as described in this chapter8BBelt deflection of 1997 ZR 580 EFI and some other late models is externally adjusted as followsaSqueeze the adjustment arms together until they release from their locking pocketsbTum the adjustment arms and plate as necessary to provide the correct belt deflectioncRelease the adjustment anns and make sure they correctly latch into the locking pocketsThe latching pockets are located every 909After making any adjustment, rotate the driven pulley to relocate the belt in the pulley groovesRecheck adjustment
