3On air-cooled engines, unbolt and remove the top cooling shroud, then slide the front shroud off from around the exhaust studsRemove the exhaust gaskets located between the cylinder and front shroud4AOn liquid-cooled engines, except 497 and 599 cc engines, unbolt and remove the outlet and thermostat housing (Figure 26) from the cylinder heads4BOn 497 and 599 cc engines, unbolt and remove the thermostat housing5Loosen the fasteners retaining the cylinder head evenly to prevent warping6Remove the cylinder head bolts or nutsLoosen the cylinder head by tapping around the outer edge with rubber or plastic mallet, then remove the cylinder head7Remove and discard the cylinder head gaskets (Figure 27) or sealing rings (Figure 28)8Lay rag over the open cylinders to prevent dirt from falling into the cylinders or water passages9Inspect the cylinder head as described in this chapterNOTE While the cylinder head is removed, check the retaining studs (Figure 27) or bolts for stripped threads or other damageMake sure the studs are tight in the crankcaseCheck the condition of threads in the cylinder blockIf necessary, remove the cylinder and replace damaged studs or repair damaged threads
