96 Hydraulic Brake Checking
The hydraulic brakes are self-adjusting in normal operationThe hydraulic brake should grip the disc firmly and should not require pumping the leverThe manufacturer recommends that only Arctic Cat Hi-Temp Brake fluid (part No0638-315) be used in the hydraulic brake systemDo not substitute different fluid or mix different types of fluid1Pull the handlebar brake lever and measure the distance between the end of the lever and the handlebar grip as shown in Figure 38Do not pump the hand lever2If the distance is less than approximately 2.54 cm (1 in, check the following: aRemove the brake reservoir cover and check the fluid levelAdd fluid if the level is lowbCheck the thickness of the brake padsIf necessary, install new brake pads as described in Chapter FourteencThe lever should be firm when the brake is engagedIf the brake feels soft, bleed the brakes as described in this chapterBefore storage, Arctco recommends draining the brake fluid and filling the system with new fluid if the fluid has been contaminated, has overheated, been in use more than 1000 miles or at the end of the seasonRefer to Chapter Fourteen for the disassembling procedure of the brake system
