1Installing bearing over shaft: When tight fit is required, the bearing inside diameter will be smaller than the shaftIn this case, driving the bearing on the shaft using normal methods may cause bearing damageInstead, the bearing should be heated before installationNote the following: aSecure the shaft so that it can be ready for bearing installationbClean the bearing surface on the shaft of all residueRemove burrs with file or sandpapercFill suitable pot or beaker with clean mineral oilPlace thermometer rated higher than 120 (248 F) in the oilSupport the thermometer so that it does not rest on the bottom or side of the potdRemove the bearing from its wrapper and secure it with piece of heavy wire bent to hold it in the potHang the bearing in the pot so that it does not touch the bottom or sides of the poteTum the heat on and monitor the thermometerWhen the oil temperature rises to approximately 120 (248 F), remove the bearing from the pot and quickly install itIf necessary, place socket on the inner bearing race and tap the bearing into placeAs the bearing chills, it will tighten on the shaft so you must work quickly when installing itMake sure the bearing is installed all the way2Installing bearing in housing: Bearings are generally installed in housing with slight interference fitDriving the bearing into the housing using normal methods may damage the housing or cause bearing damageInstead, the
