Section 09 ELECTRICAL SYSTEM Subsection 03 (CHARGING SYSTEM)
Battery Testing
There are types of battery tests: electrolyte reading and load testAn electrolyte reading is made on battery without discharging currentIt is the simplest and commonly usedA load test gives more accuracy of the battery conditionElectrolyte Reading Check charge condition using either hydrometerA hydrometer measures the charge of battery in terms of specific gravity of the electrolyteA fully charge battery will have specific gravity between 1.265 to 1.280Most hydrometers give true reading at 21C (70F)
ELECTROLYTE TEMPERATURE 38 100 32 90 27 80 21 70 60 16 10 50 40 30 -1 EXAMPLE NO1
Temperature above 21C (70F): Hydrometer reading: 1.250 Electrolyte temperature:1C (30F) Subtract .016 SpGrCorrected SpGris 1.234

OPERATION TO PERFORM .012 Add .008 to the .004 reading correct reading .004 Subtract .008 from the .012 reading .016 EXAMPLE NO2
Temperature above 21C (70F): Hydrometer reading: 1.235 Electrolyte temperature: 38C (100F) Add .012 SpGrCorrected SpGris 1.247
