ELECTRICAL Battery Testing
WARNING: Whenever installing batteries, care should be taken to avoid the possibility of explosion resulting in serious burnsAlways connect the positive (red) cable first and the negative (black) cable lastWhen working with batteries, always wear safety glasses or face shield and protective glovesBattery electrolyte contains sulfuric acid and is poisonous! Serrous burns can result from contact with the skin, eyes or clothingANTIDOTE: ExternalFlush with waterInternal- Drink large quantities of water or milkFollow with milk of magnesia, beaten egg, or vegetable oilCall physiCian immediatelyEyesFlush with water for 15 minutes and get prompt medical attention
Preparing New Battery For Service
NOTE: Do not service the battery unless it will be put into regular service within 30 daysTo assure maximum service life and performance from battery, it must have proper initial servicingTo service new battery, the following steps must be taken: Remove vent plug from vent fittingFill battery with electrolyte to upper level marks on caseSet battery aside and allow it to cool and stabilize for 12 hourAdd electrolyte to bring level back to upper level mark on caseNOTE: This is the last time that electrolyte should be addedIf the level becomes low after this point, add only distilled waterCharge battery at 13 of its amphr rating for up to hrsNOTE: This charge rate is to be used only on new batteries during the first-time chargeAfter this charge, they should be charged at the normal charge rate of 110 of amphrCheck specific gravity of each cell with hydrometer to assure each has reading of 1.270 or higher
