ELECTRICAL Starter Motor Brush Replacement
1Remove terminal nul with lock washer, flat washer, large phenolic washer, small phenolic spacers, and sealing -ringInspectO-ring and replace if damagedSlide positive brush springs to the side, pull brushes out of their guides and remove brush plateCleaning
CAUTION: ::w" Some cleaning solvents may damage the insulation in the starterCare should be exercised when selecting an appropriate solventIf the commutator needs cleaning use only an electrical contact cleaner
Armature Testing
1, Using digital multitester, measure resistance between each of the segments of the commutatorThe reading should indicate .3 ohms or lessMeasure resistance between commutator and armature shaftReading should be infinite (Ol)Inspect surface of commutator wear or discolorationReplace if excessively worn or damagedPlace armature in growlerWith growler onposition hacksaw blade lengthwise, 18" (.3 cm) above armature coil laminatesRotate armature 360If the hacksaw blade is drawn toward the armature on any point, the armature is faulty and must be replacedInspect permanent magnets in starter housingMake sure they are not cracked or separated from housingCAUTION:Use care when handling starter housingDo not drop or strike the housing as magnet damage is possibleIf magnets are damaged, starter must be replaced
