HULUDECK, STEERING AND CONTROLS SMC Repair SMC Hull Repair The hull and top deck on some models are constructed of sheet molded compound (SMC) which is an epoxy based, rigid, reinforced materialThe processes used to manufacture the hull involve high heal and pressure Once this process is complete it cannot be reversedTherefore, hot air welding or similar methods cannot be used to repair damage two part rigid structural adhesive such as 3M #08101 or equivalent is acceptable for SMC materialsPatch kits are locally available at most auto supply storesBe sure 10 follow the directions carefully according to the
repair kit packageAfter any repairs are made the hull can be prepped and painted using base coaVclear coat
marine quality paintNOTE: See paint information in General Information section for paint colorsDo not use power sanding equipment on the repair area or bond strength may be affectedHand sand onlyNOTE: For bonding use 3M #08101 structural adhesive or equivalentExample shown is through hull fitting installationBasic preparation procedure is the same for repairing damaged hulldeck componentsRemove all original adhesive and sand the area to be repaired with 80 grit paperPower sanding is not recommendedbond strength may be adversely affectedUse acetone or lacquer thinner to clean and prime the area around the repairMix parts and of the structural adhesive, apply to the fitting and hull, and immediately press the parts into place holding pressure for at least two minutes until the adhesive begins to set upHandling strength should be achieved within 30 minutesAllow 24 hours 10rtotal cure time before painting or putting into service
