or burrsRemove the rough edges or burrs with file and polish the surface until it is smooth, Inspect the starter return spring end hooksReplace the spring if it is weak, corroded or crackedInspect the inside surface of the starter case and drum for grooves or roughnessGrooves may cause erratic rewinding of the starter ropeInspect and lubricate the ratchet mechanism with waterproof grease, Check the mechanism for freedom of movement7Remove the rope from the notch and gently wind it in under the force of the spring to take it up into the drum8, Measure the spring resistance using fish scaleIf should be 1.76-3.31 lbsof pulling force9, If resistance is not within specification, adjust the amount of counterclockwise rotations made prior to allowing rope to rewind into the drumASSEMBLY
