10-2 REMOTE CONTROL # See Figure 1
The remote control box allows the person at the helm to control the throttle operation and shift movements from location other than where the outboard is mountedIn most cases, the remote control box is mounted approximately halfway forward (midship) on the starboard side of the boatThe control box usually houses key switch, engine stop switch, choke switch, neutral safety switch, warning buzzer and the necessary wiring and cable hardware to connect the control box to the outboard unit There are many different types of remote control assemblies that can be installed on your boatThe remote control assemblies covered in this manual are the ones most commonly used by the manufacturerREMOVALINSTALLATION

Remove the engine cover2Loosen the locknut and slacken the remote control cable adjustments at the throttle lever3Disconnect the end of the remote control cables from the throttle lever4Remove the screw attaching the throttle reel rod to the throttle grip5Remove the remote control cables from the powerhead6Remove the remote control cables attachments along the side of the boat7Remove the remote control unit from the boat8Remove the remote control back cover(s) and disconnect remote control cables9Remove the remote control cables from the boatTo install: 10Position the remote control cables in the boatInsure all bends are smooth and the cable is not kinked11, Install the remote control cable attachments along the side of the boat12If the remote control cables are new, screw the cable ends on the cables mm) approximately 0.43 in( 13Lubricate the cable end with waterproof marine grease14Connect the remote control cables to the remote control unit15Lubricate the cable end with waterproof marine grease16Install the remote control cables into position on the engine case17Connect the end of the remote control cables to the throttle lever18Adjust the remote control cables and tighten the locknut securely19, Install the remote control back cover(s)20Install the remote control unit on the boat21Check for proper throttle operation22Install the engine coverOne of the thlngs taken for granted on most boats IS the englne controls and cables Depending on how they are orlgnallyrouted, they WIII efther last the 11fe of the vessel or can be easily damaged These cables should be routinely malntamed by careful lnspectonfor klnks or other damage and Iubrcatlon wth marlne grade grease If the cables do not operate properly, have helper operate the controls at the helm while you observe the cable and linkage operation at the powerheadMake sure nothino is bindinobent or kinked, Check the hardware that secures the cables to boat andlowerhead to make sure they are tightInspect the clevis and cotter pins in the ends of the cables and also give some attention to the cable release hardwareAnother area of concern is the neutral start switch that is sometimes located in the control box and sometimes on the powerheadThis switch may fall out of adjustment and prevent the engine from being startedIt is easily inspected using multimeter by performing continuity check
