9-4 TRIM AND TILT Any time problem develops in the power tilt system the first step is to determine whether it is electrical or hydraulic in natureAfter the determination is made, then the appropriate steps can be taken to remedy the problemThe first step in troubleshooting is to make sure all the connectors are properly plugged in and that all the terminals and wires are free of corrosionThe simple act of disconnecting and connecting terminal may sometimes loosen corrosion that preventing proper electrical connectionInspect each terminal carefully and coat each with dielectric grease to prevent corrosionThe next step is to make sure the battery is fully charged and in good conditionWhile checking the battery, perform the same maintenance on the battery cables as you did on the electrical terminalsDisconnect the cables (negative side first), clean and coat them and then reinstall themIf the battery is past its useful life, replace itIf it only requires charge, charge itCheck the power tilt fuse (as appropriate)Many systems will have fuse to prevent large current draws from damaging the systemIf this fuse is blown, the system will cease to functionThis is good indicator that you may have problems elsewhere in the electric systemFuses don't blow without causeAfter inspecting the electrical side of the system, check the hydraulic fluid level and top it off as necessaryRemember to position the motor properly (full tilt up or down) to get an accurate measurement of fluid levelA slight decrease in the level of hydraulic fluid may cause the system to act sporadicallyFinally, make sure the manual release valve is in the proper positionA slightly open manual release valve may prevent the system from working properly and mimic other more serious problems, Just remember to check the simple things firstIf these simple tests do not diagnose the cause of the problem, then it is time to investigate more deeplyPerform the hydraulic pressure tests in this section to determine if the pump is making adequate pressureInspect the entire power tilt electrical harness with multimeter, checking for excessive resistance and proper voltageF
