8-32 LOWER UNIT 13Install the driveshaft, shift rod and driveshaft bearing assembly onto the gearcase14Tighten the bolts evenly and alternately15When installing the pinion nut, apply thread locking compound to the threads, pad the gearcase to prevent damage from the wrench and tighten the nut to 21.5-29.ftlbs(30-40 Nm)16Install the forward gear and shim(s)Be sure to have the thrust washer and shim fitted between the forward gear and the tapered roller bearing in order to secure proper backlash between this gear and the pinion gearMake absolutely sure that the thrust washer and shim are those that are found to be correct after measurino or adiustina the backlash17Install the reverse gear andthrust washer onto the propeller 20Use the following special tools to install the housing into the gearcase: Propeller shaft housing installer (09922-59410) Bearing installer (09922-59420) 21When installing the housing, tighten the attaching bolts to 11.0-14.5 ftIbs(15-20 Nm)22Install the water pump assembly23When assembling the gearcase assembly to the driveshaft housing, apply silicone sealant to both joining faces, and assemble after aligning the dowel pins, water tube wand water pump seal tubeAlso apply silicone sealant to the tightening bolt bodies and tighten the bolts to: mm: 11.0-14.5 ftIbs(15-20 Nm); 10 mm: 24.5-29.5 ftIbs(34-41 Nm) ¥Wheinstalling the gearcase assembly to the engine, apply some waterproof marine grease to the splines of the driveshaft24Refill the gearcase with new gear oilAfter the initial running of the engine, recheck the oil level and refill if necessaryIf this is procedure is not followed, it may lead to damage due to lack of lubrication25Connect the clutch shaft and clutch rodSHIMMING PROCEDURE
