5-42 IGNITION AND ELECTRICAL SYSTEMS OVERFILLING

CORROSION FRAYED OR BROKEN
Cold cranking performance is measured by cooling fully charged battery to O° (-17OC) and then testing it for 30 seconds to determine the maximum current flowIn this manner the cold cranking amp rating is the number of amps available to be drawn from the battery before the voltage drops below 7.2 voltsThe illustration depicts the amount of power in watts available from battery at different temperatures and the amount of power in watts required of the engine at the same temperatureIt becomes quite obvious-the colder the climate, the more necessary for the battery to be fully chargedReserve capacity of battery is considered the length of time, in minutes, at 80° (27OC), 25 amp current can be maintained before the voltage drops below 10.5 voltsThis test is intended to provide an approximation of how long the engine, including electrical accessories, could operate satisfactorily if the stator assembly or lighting coil did not produce sufficient currentA typical rating is 100 minutesIf possible, the new battery should have power rating equal to or higher than the unit it is replacingCRACKED CELL COVER

BATTERY LOCATION
Every battery installed in boat must be secured in well protected, ventilated areaIf the battery area lacks adequate ventilation, hydrogen gas, which is given off during charging, is very explosiveThis is especially true if the gas is concentrated and confinedFig41 visual inspection of the battery should be made each time the boat is usedSuch quick check may reveal potential problem in its early stagesA dead battery in busy waterway or far from assistance could have serious consequences
BATTERY SERVICE
straps on top of each element connect all of the positive plates and all of the negative plates into groupsThe battery is divided into cells holding number of the elements apart from the othersThe entire arrangement is contained within hard plastic caseThe top is one-piece cover and contains the filler caps for each cellThe terminal posts protrude through the top where the battery connections for the boat are madeEach of the cells is connected to its neighbor in positive-to-negative manner with heavy strap called the cell connector See Figuresand 45
