5-26 IGNITION AND ELECTRICAL SYSTEMS 3The digital multi-meter connection procedure for continuity check will depend on how the coil is constructedGenerally, the primary circuit is the small gauge wire or wires, while the secondary circuit contains the high tension or plug lead4Some ignition coils have the primary andor secondary circuits grounded on one endOn these type coils, only the continuity check is doneOn ignition coils that are not grounded on one end, the short-to-ground test must also be doneRegardless of the coil type, compare the resistance with that found in supplemental "Ignition Coil Spec" chart When checking the secondary side, make sure to read the procedure for your particular engineSome models require the spark plug caps be removed and others require them to remain onIn some cases the cap is bad, not the coilBad resistor caps can be the cause of high-speed misfireUnscrew the cap and check the resistance (5 kilo-ohms)3Disconnect the CDI uniVignition coil leads4Loosen the bolts and remove the CDI unitlignition coil The ignition coil and CDI unit are integrated into one assemblyTo install: 5Install the CDI univignition coil onto the engine6Connect the CDI uniffignition coil leadsMake sure all connections are tight and free of corrosion7Install the spark plug wires8Install the engine coverDT9.9 and DT15

5The other method used to test ignition coils is with Dynamic Ignition Coil Digital multi-meterSince the output side of the ignition coil has very high voltage, regular voltmeter can not be usedWhile resistance reading can be valuable, the best tool for checking dynamic coil performance is dynamic ignition coil digital multi-meter6Connect the coil to the digital multi-meter according to the manufacturer's instructions7Set the spark gap according to the specifications8Operate the coil for about minutes9If the spark jumps the gap with the correct spark color, the coil is probably good1Remove the engine cover2Disconnect the spark plug wires3Disconnect the two pole connector and the lead wire extending from the CDI uniffignition coil and remove from the engineThe ignition coil and CDI unit are integrated into one assemblyTo install: Install the CD1 univignition coil on the engine and connect the twopole connector5Connect the CDI uniuignition coil lead wireMake sure all connections are tiaht and free of corrosion6Connect the spark plug wires7Install the engine coverREMOVALINSTALLATION
