3-1 MAINTENANCE Flywheel Rotation
The instructions may call for rotating the flywheel until certain marks are aligned with the timing pointerWhen the flywheel must be rotated, always move the flywheel in the indicated directionIf the flywheel should be rotated in the opposite direction, the water pump impeller vanes would be twistedShould the powerhead be started with the pump tangs bent back in the wrong direction, the tangs may not have time to bend in the correct direction before they are damagedThe least amount of damage to the water pump will affect cooling of the powerhead Test Tank
Since the engine must be operated at various times and engine speeds during some procedures, test tank or moving the boat into body of water, is necessaryIf installing the engine in test tank, outfit the engine with an appropriate test propellerFig46 Measure the breaker point gap using feeler gauge
Water must circulate through the lower unit to the powerhead anytime the powerhead is operating to prevent damage to the water pump in the lower unitJust five seconds without water will damage the water pump impellerRemember the powerhead will not start without the emergency tether in place behind the kill switch knobNever operate the powerhead above fast idle with flush attachment connected to the lower unitOperating the powerhead at high rpm with no load on the propeller shaft could cause the powerhead to runaway causing extensive damage to the unitDecreasing gap
