In addition to the engine and inline fuel filters, there is usually another filtel located in the fuel supply lineThis is the fuellwater separatorIt is used to remove water particles from the fuel prior to entering the engine or inline filterWater can enter the fuel supply from variety of sources and can lead to poor engine performance and ultimately, serious engine damage, Because of the large variety of differences in both portable and fixed fuel tanks, it is impossible to give single procedure to cover all applicationsINSPECTIONLUBRICATION
See Figures 11,12 and 13
The steering head and other pivot points of the outboard-to-engine mounting components need periodic lubrication with marine grade grease to provide smooth operation and prevent corrosionUsually, these pivot points are easily lubricated by simply attaching grease gun to the fittingsIf the engine is used in salt water, the frequency of applying lubricant is usuallv doubled in cornoarison to ooeration in fresh waterDue to the verv corrosive nature of salt water, an anti-seize thread compound should be used on all exposed fasteners outside of the cowling to reduce the chance of them seizing in place and breaking off when you try to remove them Rinsing off the engine after each use is very good habit to get into, not only does it help preserve the appearance of the engine, it virtually eliminates the corrosive effects of operating in salt waterFig11 The steering head
