R&R AND OVERHAUL_ Refer to Fig822-11 for exploded view of lower unit gearcase assemblyDuring disassembly, note the location of all shims and ';ashers to aid in reassemblyTo remove gearcase, first remove drain plug (15) and vent plug (13) and drain gear lubricantRemove shift rod adjustment cover located at base of motor leg and loosen lower shift rod adjustment screw (10Fig822-12)Remove cotter pin (35Fig822-11), propeller (34) with hub (33) and shear pin (31)Remove cap screw and nut retaining lower unit gearcase and withdraw from drive shaft housingRemove stopper (30) and bearing housing (29) retaining screwsBeing careful, pry bearing housing (29) from gearcase housingWithdraw bearing housing with propeller shaft assembly Refer to Fig822-4 and remove water pump assemblyRemove retainer (2-Fig822-11), oil seal (3) and snap ring (4)Withdraw drive shaft assemblyRemove pinion gear (18) with shim (17)Remove forward gear (20) with shim (19)Use suitable bearing puller to extract bearing (16) if neededInspect all components for excessive wear aand damageApply water resistant grease to lip portion of all sealsAll seals and "0" rings should be renewed when unit is reassembled
