Determining ower apered Roller Bearing Shim Requirements NOTE: Pinion depth and forward gear backlash MUST BE DETERMINED BEFORE setting driveshaft lower tapered roller bearing shim height1Remove Bea ring Carrier Removal Tool (9146086A 1) and Puller Bolt (91-857 16) from gearcase NOTE: When bearing carrier is removedpropeller shaft has no lateral support and may be damaged if struck5Remove propeller shaft, cam follower and shift cam by pulling shaft straight out of gear housing(DO NOT JERK propeller shaft If propeller shaft will not come out, proceed with Step "a" or "b", fo llowing: aPush propeller shaft back into place against the forward gearVisually inspect location of shift cam by looking down shift shaft hole (illuminated with flashlight) If splined hole in shift cam is visible, reinstall shift shaft and rotate shift shaft to neutral position Remove shift shaft, then remove propeller shaft as instructed in Step 8, immediately preceding bPush propeller shaft back into place against forward gearSlide bearing carrier back into gear housing (to support propeller shaft)Place gear housing on its left side (viewed from rear) and strike upper leading end of gear housing with rubber malletThis will dislodge the shift cam from cam follower into clearance pocket in left side of gear housingRemove bearing carrier and pu ll propeller shaft out of gear housingNOTE: If Step 5-b was used to remove propeller shaftthe sh ift ca ca be retrieved after removal of forward gear6Install Driveshaft Removal Tool (91-92785A1) on driveshaftPosition dial indicator so that indicator arm touches bottom of driveshaft removal tool11322
