NOTE: Forward gear is positioned free in gear housing and must be lifted out before Step is performed 5If inspection of drive shaft needle bearing surface determines that replacement of needle bearing is requiredremove bearing from gear housi ng as follows: aUse heat lamp to warm both sides of gear hous ing where drive shaft needle bearing is locatedbUse Driver Rod (9137323) from Bearing Re moval and Installati on Kit (9 1-31229A5), Pil ot (91-92790)and Mandrel (91 -92789)cRemove drive shaft needle bearing by striking Driver Rod with malletIMPORTANT: Discard drive shaft needle bearing after removal(Bearing cannot be reused
CLEANING and INSPECTION 1Clean drive shaft, tapered bearing and race, and pinion gear with solvent Dry with compressed airDO NOT spin dry shaft bearing 2In spect pini on gear for pi tt ing, grooves, sco ringuneven wear, and discoloration from overheatingReplace pini on gear, if any of the above conditions are found3Inspect drive shaft needle bearing surface (area just above pini on gear splin es) for pittinggrooves, sco ringuneven wear, and lor discoloration from overheatingReplace drive shaft and drive shaft needle bearingif any of the preceding cond itions are found 4Inspect drive shaft to crankshaft splines for wearReplace drive shaft if wear is excessive 5Inspect tapered bearing race for pitting, grooves, scoringuneven wear, and discoloration from over heatingReplacetapered bearing and race as set, if any of the preceding conditions are found6Inspect water pump base oi seal su rface for groovesReplace rive shaft if any grooves are found
