2Inspect connecting rod bearing surfaces for the following: aRust pittingbWater etching markscSpallingdChatter markseUneven wearfOverheating (Bluish discoloration)3If necessary, "clean up" connecting rod bearing surfaces, as followsaAssemble rod cap (a) onto connecting rod (b) [fracture marks (c) correctly aligned] and secure with rod cap screws (d) IMPORTANT: Clean connecting rodjust enough to clean up bearing surfacesDO NOT continue to clean after marks are removed from bearing surfacescThoroughly wash connecting rod with solvent and dry with compressed aird Recheck bearing surfaces and replace any connecting rod that can not be properly cleaned up
eLubricate bearing surfaces of connecting rod (to be reused) with light oil to prevent rust
Pistons
IMPORTANT: If engine was submerged while engine was running, piston pin andor connecting rod may be bentIf piston pin is bent, piston must be replaced(Piston pins are not sold separately because of matched fit into piston)If piston pin is bent, connecting rod must be checked for straightness (refer to "Connecting Rods", preceding for checking straightness)1Check piston for scoringcracks, metal damage and cracked or worn piston pin bosses If any of these conditions are foundreplace piston2Inspect piston ring grooves for wear, burns or distortion3Use the recessed end of broken piston ring to clean carbon deposits from ring grooves
