DISASSEMBLY
1Remove starter as outlined in "Starter Removal and Installation," preceding2Remove through bolts from starter3Tap commutator end cap to loosen and remove from frameDo not loose brush springs
5Remove armature (with drive end cap) from starter frame6Remove locknut and remove drive assembly from armature shaft
aThrough BoltsCommutator End Cap
4Brush replacement is recommended if brushes are pitted, chipped or worn to less than 0.25 in(6.4 mm)If necessary, remove brushes as follows: aRemove hex nut and washers from POSI TIVE (+) terminal and remove POSITIVE brushes and terminal as an assemblyb, Remove bolts securing NEGATIVE (-) brushes and brush holder to end cap51711Hold Armature Shaft with Wrench on Hex Portion of Drive Assembly
