3Rotate drive shaft to 10 revolutions This will properly seat forward gear tapered roller bearing 4Install components as shown 5Position dial indicator on line of backlash indicator tool a"Narrow" Seal (Lip Away from Mandrel)" Wide" Seal (Lip toward Mandrel)Mandrel
3Install gasket (a) and O-ring (b)
aDial Indicator Adaptor Kit (9183155)Dia Indicat or (91-58222A 1)Backlash Indicator Tool (91-78473)
6Lightly turn drive shaft back-and-forth (no movement should be noticed at propeller shaft) 7Dial indicator registers amount of backlashBacklash should be between .07 in and .010 in (.178mm to .2S4mm)8If backlash is less than minimum specificationremove shim(s) from front of forward gear bearing race to obtain correct backlash When reinstalling pinion nut apply Loctite Grade "A" on threads of nut9If backlash is more than maximum specification, add shim(s) in front of forward gear bearing race to obtain correct backlash When reinstalling pinion nut, apply Loctite Grade "A" to threads of nut' By adding or subtracting .001 in(0.025mm) shim, the backlash will change approximately .00125 in (0.032mm)
