Starter System STARTER SYSTEM COMPONENTS The starter system consists of the following parts: 1Battery 2Starter solenoid 3Neutral start switch 4Starter motor 5Ignition switch DESCRIPTION The function of the starting system is to crank the engineThe battery supplies electrical energy to crank the starter motorWhen the ignition switch is turned toStart" position, the starter solenoid is activated and completes the starter circuit between the battery and starterThe neutral start switch opens the starter circuit when the shift control lever is not in neutralThis prevents accidental starting when engine is in gear
ACAUTION
The starter motor may be damaged seriously if operated continuouslyDO NOT operate continuously for more than 30 secondsAllow minute cooling period between starting attemptsTROUBLESHOOTING the STARTER CIRCUIT Before beginning the starter circuit troubleshooting flow chart, foil owi ng, check fi rstfor the following conditions: 1Make sure that battery is fully charged 2Check that shift control lever is in "neutral" position3Check terminals for corrosion and loose co nnections4Check cables and wiring for frayed or worn insulation5Check fuse in red wireThe followingStarter Circuit Troubleshooting Flow Chart" is designed as an aid to troubleshooting the starter circuitThis flow chart will accurately locate any existing malfunction Location of "Test Points" (called out in flow chart on next page) are numbered below+
