1Clean the forward gear assembly and the forward gear bearing cup with suitable solvent and dry with compressed airBe careful not to spin the bearings2Inspect the gear for pitting, chipped or broken teeth, hairline fractures, and excessive or uneven wearReplace the forward gear and the pinion gear as set if any defects are found3Inspect the clutch jaws of the gear for damageThe surfaces must not be chipped or rounded offReplace both the forward and pinion gear as set if any of these conditions exist
