Use slide hammer to remove forward gear tapered bearing race as shown

bUsing punch and hammer, remove bushing from the clutch jaw (teeth) side of gear31 Pull shift shaft assembly from gear housing 32Remove outer a-ring from shift shaft retainer

29To determine if bushing (inside forward gear) requires replacement, inspect area on propeller shaft that bushing contacts for pitting, scoringgrooves, uneven wear or discoloration from overheatingReplace if any of these conditions are found30If inspection determines that replacement of forward gear bushing is required, remove bushing from forward gear, as follows:
