BREAKER POINTS
GeneralEngine operation is greatly affected by breaker point condition and adjustment of the gap If points are burned or badly oxidized, little or no cu rrent will passand as result, the engine may not operate at allIf it does runit is likely to miss at full throttleAdjusting the gap determines how long the points stay open definite time is needed for the magnetic field in the ignition coi to build upIf the points are closed lor too short timea weak spark will be produced by the coil II points are open too long, there may be excess ive arching and burning 01 poi nts Always replace badly burned or pitted breaker points certain amount of bui ld-up or metal transfer occu under normal operating conditions; however, if this occurs 100 frequently and becomes excess ive, the condenser may be at fault (see Condenser Service for details) Slightly pitied points can be dressed down with paint filealthough this should be done only as temporary field fix since po ints may tend to ar more steadily after tiling If the points are oxidized, rub piece of coarse cloth between the surfaces Dirty or oily points can be cleaned with cloth, but make sure no particles of lint are left between surfaces RemovelBreaker pointfrom stator plale
