engaged with the ring gear, and at the same time, slide the handles of pair of pliers under the pinion gear to lock the pinion gear with the ring gear, as shown2- Remove the handle from the end of the starter ropeOBSERVE how the rope is wound onto the spool and how the rope is secured by knotPull the knot and the rope from the spoolINST ALLA TION Rope Purchase Instructions The length and diameter of the starter rope required will vary depending on the size horsepower engine being servicedTherefore, check the Hand Starter Rope Specifications in the Appendix, and then purchase quality nylon piece of the proper length and diam eter sizeOnly with the proper rope, will you be assured of efficient operation following installationEach end of the nylon rope should be "fused" by burning them slightly with very small flame (a match flame will do) to melt the fibers togetherAfter the end fibers have been "fused" and while they are still hot, use piece of cloth as protection and pull the end out flat to prevent "glob" from forming3- Tie figure knot in one end of the new ropeFeed the rope through the spool anchor around the back of the spool and out the hole in the cowlingInstall the handle on the the end of the rope4- Pull and hold tension on the rope, and at the same time remove the pliers from under the pinion gearAllow the starter rope to rewind in normal mannerAfter the rope is fully wound onto the starter spool, the rope handle should be up tight
