PINION GEARHP DISASSEMBLING 6- Remove the pin in the piruon gear, and then remove the pinion gear from the collarSlip the bearing head off the spoolRemove the retainer, installed under the pinion gear, from the starter7- Remove the spring retainer (the long tube) from the center of the spool8- Pull the starter spring from the spoolCLEANING AND INSPECTING

Wash all parts in solvent, and then dry them with compressed airInspect and replace the main spring if it is damaged or wornCheck the bottom end of the spring very carefully to be sure the two tangs (one on the inner and the other on the outer spring) are in good condition with no sign of distortionInspect the bushing in the bottom collar of the starter housingThis bushing was not removed in the disassembling proceduresFeel with finger for any roughness, burrs, or other evidence of excessive wear or damageIf the bushing is in good condition, it need not be removedCheck the rope conditionIf the rope is frayed or shows any sign of weakness, it should be replacedThere will never be an easier time to replace the rope than while the starter is disassembledInspect the teeth of the pinion gearThe teeth will show some signs of normal wearA broken tooth or excessive wear on one side of the teeth is justification for replacement
