MANUAL SHIFT 28 HP TO 40 HP LOWER UNIT REMOVAL TypeWindow Removal to Gain Access 1- Remove the metal plate from the port side of the engineAccess to the shift coupler is gained through the openingDisconnect the shift rod from the exhaust housing by removing the bottom bolt from the shift couplerGOOD WORDS In MOST cases, if any unit being serviced has the 6-inch extension, it is NOT necessary to remove the extension in order to "drop" the lower unit2- Remove the rear exhaust housing cover installed on some 35 hp models and on all 40 hp modelsThis cover MUST be removed to gain access to one of the bolts securing the lower unit to the exhaust housingRemove the bolts securing the lower unit to the housingSome units may have an additional bolt on each side and one at the rear of the engineWork the lower unit loose from the exhaust housingIt is not uncommon for the water tubes to be stuck in the water pump making separation of the lower unit from the exhaust housing difficultHowever, with patience and persistence, the tubes will come free of the pump and the lower unit separated from the exhaust housingMORE GOOD WORDS Position the lower unit in vertical position on the edge of the work bench
