LOWER UNIT

SPECIAL WORDS If the unit being serviced uses the shift rod coupler arrangement, then the coupler must be connected to the shift rod BEFORE the lower unit is fully mated with the exhaust housing, as described in the previous step and the "Good Words"If the unit being serviced uses the driveshaft with the pin, extreme care must be exercised as the shaft is guided into the exhaust housing to allow the pin to index with the groove in the housingIf the unit being serviced uses the bolt through the window arrangement, insert the bolt into the connectorTAKE TIME to read and understand the "Good Words" just before Step 24-, before making this connectionAfter the bolt is in place, install and secure the window with the attaching hardwareIf the unit being serviced has the shift connector requiring the powerhead to be removed, install the shift rod into the shift linkage of the shift handleInstall the power head25- Check to be sure the water pickup tube is clean, smooth, and free of any corrosionCoat the water pickup tube and grommet with lubricant as an aid to installationGuide the lower unit up into the exhaust housing with the water tube sliding into the rubber grommet of the water pumpContinue to work the lower unit towards the exhaust housing, and at the same time rotate the propeller shaft as an aid to indexing the driveshaft splines with the crankshaftStart the bolts securing the lower unit to the exhaust housings togetherTighten the bolts EVENLY and ALTERNATELY
