Badly worn water pump impellerThe impeller should be inspected thoroughlyThe best practice is to replace the impeller each time the lower unit is disassembled for service
clutch dog and drive gear arrangement surfaces are nicked, chipped, or the edges rounded, the operator may be performing the shift operation improperly or the controls may not be adjusted correctlyThese items MUST be replaced if they are damagedInspect the dog ears on the inside of the forward and reverse gearsThe gears must be replaced if they are damagedCheck the cradle that rides on the inside diameter of the clutch dogThe sides of the cradle must be in good condition, free of any damage or signs of wearIf damage or wear has occurred, the cradle must be replacedCheck the shift lever and the two prongs that fit inside the cradleCheck to be sure the prongs are not worn or roundedDamage or wear to the prongs indicates the lever must be replaced
