SERVICE r-JO SHIFT nicked, chipped, or the edges rounded, the operator may be performing the shift operation improperlyThese items MUST be replaced if they are damagedLOWER UNIT ASSEMBLING 1- Tap NEW seal into place on top of the lower unit housing2- Tap NEW seal into place in the gear case headInstall NEW O-ring into the groove in the gearcase3- Install the pinion gear into the recess in the lower unit housingIf the unit being serviced is the "Weedless" type gearcase, install the thrust bearing with the bosses on the bearing indexed between the two bosses in the gearcaseHold the pinion gear in place with one hand, and with the other hand install the driveshaft down into the lower unitContinue to hold the pinion gear, and at the same time, rotate the driveshaft slightly after it makes contact with the pinion gear to allow the splines on the shaft to index with the splines in the gearSPECIAL WORDS After the drives haft is installed, care must be exercised NOT to allow the driveshaft to slip out of position in the pinion gearThis is especially important during water pump installation workIf the driveshaft should come free, the lower unit must be disassembled in order to install the driveshaft
