PRESTOLITE STARTER Turn the commutator in lathe if it is out-of-round by more than 0.005"Check the springs in the brush holder to be sure none are brokenCheck the spring tension and replace if the tension is not 3240 ouncesCheck the insulated brush holders for shorts to groundIf the brushes are worn down to 14" or less, they must be replacedCheck the field brush connections and lead insulationA brush kit and contact kit are available at your local marine dealer, but all other assemblies must be replaced rather than repairedThe armature, fields, and brush holders must be checked before assembling the starter motorSee the testing section in this chapter for detailed procedures to test the starter motorASSEMBLING THE PRESTOLITE 1- Slide the plastic terminal and brush lead retainer into the groove in the frame with the small protrusion on one side facing DOWNWARDContinue pushing the retainer into the groove until it is fully seatedWork the brush retainer down on top of the frame with the postive lead through the cut-a-way in the retainer plateCheck to be sure the field coil negative brush passes through the cut-a-way in the plate2- Install the spring into the retainerPush the negative brush into its retainer and then, wrap fine piece of wire around the front side of the brush and the back side of the retainerTighten the wire snuglyThis wire will hold the brush in the retainerRepeat the procedure for the positive brushCheck to be sure the plate is secured onto the frame and the cut-a-way is over
