DELCO-REM STARTER illustration will be most helpful in assembling the parts in the proper sequenceFirst, slide the cushion retainer down onto the dr ive end cap, with the shoulder facing UPWARDNext, slide the cushion down the armature shaft and seat it over the shoulder of the retainerInstall the cushion cap over the cushionSlide thrust washer down the armature shaft onto the top of the capRotate the screw shaft clockwise into the the pinion, and then slide the pinion and screw shaft down the armature shaft onto the thrust washerInstall the cap over the end of the screw shaftSlide the following parts onto the armature shaft in the order given: The sleeve; spr ing; pinion stop washer; and finally thread the nut onto the end of the shaftTighten the nut securelyTo test the complete starter motor, proceed directly to Section 6-16To install the starter motor onto the engine, if no further work is to be performed, proceed directly to Section 6-176-13 DELCO-REMY REMOVAL 1- Before beginning any work on the starter motor, disconnect the positive (+) lead from the battery terminalRemove the engine hoodDisconnect the red cable at the starter motor terminalRemove the 12" bolt securing the starter bracketThis bolt is located on the starboard side of the engine just above the carburetorRemove SERVICE
