MAINTENANCE VALVE CLEARANCE
VALVE CLEARANCE
Checking
IMPORTANT: The engine must be cold when checking the valve clearanceRemove the engine side coversRefer to "ENGINE SIDE COVERS" on page 54Remove the manual starter or flywheel cover, and the cylinder head coverRefer to the POWERHEAD section
Adjusting
Loosen the locknutUse screwdriver to turn the valve adjusting screw to bring valve clearance to within the specificationHold the adjusting screw in place and tighten the locknut to torque of 97 in Ibs(11 Nm)Check the valve clearance again
CAUTION

Rotate the crankshaft clockwise to prevent damage to the water pump impellerRotate the crankshaft clockwise until the No1 piston is at TOC on its compression strokeMeasure the valve clearances for the No1 cylinder by inserting thickness gauge between the valve stem end and the valve adjusting screw on the rocker armFor both intake and exhaust valves, the valve clearance should be 0.005 to 0.007 in(0.13 to 0.17 mm)If any valve is out of specification, adjust the valve clearance3
