ELECTRICAL ELECTRIC STARTER SERVICING Remove pinion and base
Cleaning and Inspection
Do not clean drive assembly while the starter and drive are installedThe cleaning agent could drain into the starter, washing dirt from the drive into the bearings and commutatorIf the pinion does not properly engage the flywheelthe pinion and screw shaft assembly may be worndistorted, or dirtyLocate the fault and correct before completing assemblyAfter disassembling, clean each part with grease solvent and inspectInspect the brushesReplace if one-half worn, damaged, or cracked Replace brush springs, if weakClean commutator with 300 grade emery clothIf commutator surface is unevenly worn or pitted, turn on latheRemove any trace of oil or metal dust from commutatorCheck the armature on growler for shorted turns using test light or meterInspect armature insulation for indications of overheating or damaged windingsClean off any carbon deposits or foreign matter which could contribute to failure of windings
