To prevent accidental starting while servicing, twist and remove all spark plug leadsRemove the manual starterRefer to MANUAL STARTER sectionDisengage choke knob from the carburetor choke link, and remove the two screws from the front of the lower engine cover
Installation
Installation is essentially the reverse of removalPay close attention to any additional task that may be required for installationApply Nut Lock to screws and install starter lockout housingTorque screws to 22 to 36 inIbs(2.5 to Nm)Apply Triple-Guard grease to bushing and install in bossPlace shift rod lever in position and attach to shift rod with pinSecure with new cotter pinApply Triple-Guard grease to shaftPlace shift link lever and detent cam in position and slide shaft through shift link lever, detent cam, boss, and shift rod leverInstall clip on starboard end of shaft and shift shaft pin with set screw on port end of shaftInstall shift handle and secure with wave washer, washer, and screwInstall drive pin in shift handle and secure with clipPlace shift link rod in position and install retaining pinInstall new cotter pin1Rear cover screw
