Gearcase Servicing5 Removal
1To avoid accidental starting of engine while servicing, twist and remove spark plug lead2Remove cotter pin, propeller, and drive pin3Remove the drain and fill screws and drain gearcase oil
[}] 4Open shift rod hole cover and loosen shift rod screw[] 5Remove two gearcase screws
6Separate gearcase assembly from exhaust housingWithdraw gearcase carefully to avoid damaging driveshaftCheck if water tube bushing stayed on water tube or is in water pump
Disassembly
Keep all thrust washers and shims separateYou must be able to identify location and thickness for reassemblyDiscard all gaskets, O-rings, and seals
[] 1Remove propeller shaft bearing housing screws
2Insert screwdriver into propeller shaft bearing housing pry pointsGently pry to remove bearing housing and propeller shaft Remove bearing housing, shimreverse gear (j), and thrust washer from propeller shaft assembly
As the propeller shaft is removed, note if the forward thrust washer came out with the propeller shaftMeasure the thickness of the forward thrust washerthe reverse thrust washerand the reverse gear shimand write down the thickness of each in the SHIMS REMOVED chart3Remove water pump nuts and water pump housing G:Ql21 9
