16To assemble the propeller shaft components, place the spring between the gear and the shaftThe tang end of the spring faces the gearAssemble by turning the gear counterclockwise while pushing together

17Place the forward gear thrust bearing and thrust washer on the propeller shaftChamfered edge of the washer must face away from the gear18Install the propeller shaft assembly
19Wrap single layer of cellophane tape around the propeller shaft over the groove in the shaftThis will prevent the seals in the gearcase head from becoming damaged in the groove20Lightly apply OMC Triple-Guard grease to new gearcase head a-ringInstall the a-ring in groove of the housing
21Coat the a-ring and two gearcase head attaching screws with OMC Gasket Sealing CompoundSlide the gearcase head over the propeller shaft and then fully seat it in its correct position22Install and tighten the gearcase head retaining screws to torque of 60-84 inIbs(7-9 Nm)
