Reverse Gear Clearance
1Install dial indicator on driveshaft as shownZero dial indicator2Gently push driveshaft down and read driveshaft movementMake note of driveshaft movement
3Install reverse gear, 1.9 mm reverse gear shim from shim kit, and spacer DO NOT install reverse gear thrust washer
4To avoid injury, wear eye protection while installing the propeller shaft bearing housingUsing OMC Propeller Shaft Housing Installer, PIN 342690 and OMC Handle, PIN 345822, align propeller shaft bearing housing and gearcase key slots Install until seatedInstall keyDO NOT install -ring on propeller shaft bearing housing5Install tab washer by aligning boss on propeller shaft bearing housing with groove in tab washer6Using ow: Propshaft Retainer Removerllnstaller, PIN 342688, install retainer with "OFF" mark facing outTorque retainer to 115 ftIbs(160 Nm)7Again gently push down on driveshaftRecord driveshaft movementIf driveshaft movement was less than the original reading, replace reverse gear shim with 1.8 mm shim and repeat test8Use progressively thinner reverse gear shims until driveshaft movement is the same as your measurement in Step 2This indicates reverse gear has as much clearance as forward gearUse only one shim to adjust for specified gear clearance48973
