1If the pinion does not properly engage the flywheel, the pinion and armature helix may be worn, distorted, or dirtyLocate the cause and correct before completing assemblyCheck the pinion teeth, if excessive wear or damage is found, replace the pinion []] 2Check the armature's commutator surfaceIf dirty or burnt surfaces are found, clean them with 300 grade emery cloth as shownIf commutator surface is unevenly worn or pitted, turn on latheRemove any trace of oil or metal dust from commutator

3Inspect armature insulation for indications of overheating or damaged windingsMeasure the commutator's outside diameter with vernier caliperReplace the armature if the commutator is below the service limit Standard Dimension: Service Limit: 1.30 in(33 mm) 1.26 in(32 mm)

4Wear Safety GlassesClean out all mica and metal particles with compressed air, then check the depth of the commutator's mica undercutIf lower than the service limit, replace the armature Standard Dimension: Service Limit: 0.020-0.030 in(0,5-0,8 mm) 0.008 in(0,2 mm)
