Ignition Coils
The ignition coils are mounted on the cylinder head This is "waste spark" system in which two cylinders fire simultaneously, one on compression stroke, the other on an exhaust strokeThe upper coil fires cylinders No.2 and 3; the lower coil fires cylinders No.1 and 4Primary circuit operation is controlled entirely by the ECU
Ignition Coil and Lead Tests
Use an ohmmeter to conduct the following resistance checks:
Primary Circuit Test
Unplug connector at ignition coilConnect one ohmmeter lead to one coil terminal, and the other meter lead to the remaining coil terminalResistance should be 1.92.5 fl
If the coil checks okay, check primary circuit wiring back to the ECULook for opens, grounds, corrosion, or connector pin problemsDRC7616
