17Press detent lever down to engage REVERSE (lowest) positionDoing so will provide clearance to install the clutch shaft assembly18Note the position of the locating pin at the front of the housing The pin must engage corresponding recess inside the nose of the gearcase
19Tip the rear of gearcase slightly downwardThis will help hold the housing, washer, bearing, and gear together, as well as keep the detent lever depressedInstall the clutch shaft assemblyMake sure the locating pin is properly engaged after the assembly is installed20Lubricate two new shift rod cover a-rings with OMC Triple-Guard greaseInstall the a-rings into the shift rod cover
21Place the shift rod grommet and spacer on the shift rodGrease the threaded end of the shift rod and insert it through the coverTurn the shift rod while pushing it through the cover to avoid damaging the a-rings
